Clothing costs and thoughts
Urthel team philosophy. We like to ride with good people and that leads to forming a team of these like minded individuals. Teams offer many rewards combined with many hassles. Team Urthel is simply trying to minimize the hassles part of the equation. To this end we are very loosely organized, less bureaucracy means less hassle. The team clothing has sponsors, but these are no work sponsors, better than wearing a blank jersey, at least we look pro. Nobody on this team deserves sponsorship of any kind. We are happy to pay for our stuff, and happier still when we get a deal. We all race for fun, nobody on the team is gonna be a super star and if you think you still have a shot, might I suggest either GP or ineedaprocontract.com.
Clothing costs: The team clothing costs posted on the web are estimates. They most likely be lower, but as they currently stand are right about wholesale, which is a good deal. The clothing is from Vermarc which is much better than most of the custom clothing out there and is essentially at "cost". In this case, we built in a small amount to cover freight and USCF team license. The costs will be adjusted accordingly to cover that and only that amount. There will be no team check book, no team slush fund, that is hassle. It is never cheap and when buying a bunch of new bike clothing. There also is a good option to help with the costs of the clothing. The team will promote several races in 2005. Two ice races in the winter and possibly a cross race or two in the fall. Proceeds from these events will be distributed directly to the people who help with the event. So, help with races and get some $$ back for clothes. The ice races will take place prior to the bill for the clothing coming due so if the races make money that could take some of the sting out of the bill.

Winter Training
I just got back from a ride. I did a cx workout with run-ups, intervals, hill repeats, all within 5 miles of my house. Sweet. It was twilight, then dark, and not many people out. Sunset along Lake Harriet was beautiful and the creek gulley is kind of creepy after dark, all the lights are down for replacement and my Vega is so sharp/bright it accentuates the peripheral dark in the woods.
Until I flatted, only 6 blocks from my house. Front flat on Ksyrium, I ran home pushing the bike. Sidi toe spikes sparking along and my toes hating me.
Problem is I've had a flat every time I've ridden these new Panaracer Cross Blaster tires. That would be 7 flats in 7 rides. Different problem each time, pinch one time, glass the next, a thorn, etc. Two in one ride. I know, glass flat on cx tires? Not only that, it was through a tread knob. First time in my life of cx/mtb rides I put glass through a knobby. They're very light and they ride OK off-road for clincher cx tires, but I think I'm done with them. Last time I flatted like this in quick succession I ended up not riding for a month. I'm not in this for the wrenching. For more on that...
Anyway, this was the first ride since April wearing the Orbit tights. Orbits are bibs made from a fabric much like neoprene and have one of those Castelli red synthetic chamois. So, a winter ride. I'll write more tomorrow about whether there will be any more winter rides.
